Anyone else out there have a hard time defining what their home design is/should be?

Is this just me?

I struggle with this a lot. I like a lot of styles. My style has changed and evolved and ebbed and flowed depending on where we live and the season of our lives. And budget. That dang budget comes into play a lot. We are always looking for affordable style too.

As we prepare to do a major downsize from our home in New Brunswick to our tiny cottage in Nova Scotia I find myself wondering what style I WANT in this new chapter of our lives. We have recently sold our home (you can see it here), it’s been emotional, I am not going to lie. I’ll write a little about that soon.

Our tiny cottage by the sea has been a rental for the last 4 years, so we just decorated it on a budget and in (affordable) simple breezy coastal style. (you can see the cottage here) Easy to maintain, no clutter etc. Rental. Simple enough. But as we comtemplate moving here and making it our home things get murky. We have to find places for some more creature comforts, some things we love and things like winter coats ha ha.

I am selling almost all our furniture from our home. It won’t fit in the cottage.

So I am able to plan and design new spaces, but, I can’t decide or commit or make up my mind – so I was just “pinning” and thinking. Then, in came Marian’s new book. (Marian is Miss Mustard Seed by the way).

I had some sneak peeks as it was being written, here and there, but thought it would be more “designer-y” but its PERFECT.

I’m smitten with this book and its ease of helping me find my design style. I have been doodling and planning and I have a better idea of what I want now. I still don’t have a “plan” but I’m getting there. I know I want softer colours, greens and blues, I’m learning I love textures, and I want to play on some of the colours from outside, our ocean view is kinda special here.

I love all the inspirational quotes. It’s a feel good book.

  1. I’m a random mix of Farmhouse chippy love, boho with a side of retro….but budget is always the biggest struggle! ( I’ve followed everywhere I can!!! ?)

  2. OMG, defining my style is such a struggle for me! I wish I could just walk into a store and head for the Kelly Style department ? I really don’t know how to define it – I love bright & fun colors, but I also love white combined with wood and soft colours. I like some modern and some traditional. Simple lines, but not too sparse. Not too rough & rugged, but not too precious. Now I need to somehow combine all of these styles into one house! Starting from scratch is awesome, but also really hard!

    So there’s #2 covered, and I’ve already done #1 and #3 ?

  3. I already like you on facebook and receive your newsletters. My number 1 design frustration is that I love too many things!! Also, like most of us, budget and time can be frustrating too lol. You have big time inspired e to start pursuing something I enjoy. I have a Facebook page – Flipping Vintage

  4. I follow both and of course I subscribe to your news letter. For so long I felt bad about my space because I did not want or could afford what was trending at the moment. I love a mix of old and new ~ pieces that mean something to me that has been passed down through generations mixing with some new and making it my own. A little bit of natural wood and some painted, some chippy. It works for me to create a comfortable livable space. I would LOVE this book as trying to mix it all together is challenging to me at times.
